Inside Groves Fest 2023: Art, Music, and Cannabis Culture

The world of music festivals is constantly evolving, and every so often, an event breaks the mold and provides an experience like no other. That’s exactly what happened at Groves Fest in Orlando. The two-day festival celebrated not just music but also a unique fusion of art, culture, and lifestyle.

With a glassblowing showcase, a cannabis convention, a car show, a sneaker convention, and a half pipe complete with skateboarders catching Florida’s infamously muggy air Groves Fest presented a one-of-a-kind event that left a lasting impact on all who attended. The staff also went above and beyond to ensure festivalgoers stayed safe from the scorching Florida sun by keeping a keen eye on all in attendance, providing water when needed, and even offering sunscreen to those pale and pasty ones such as myself.

Passionate music fan and faithful festival-goer Ben McQuay told MusicMoveMe that this year’s festival was “Bigger and better” than last year’s event. With so much to do, seeing all that Groves Fest had to offer felt impossible. Still, the weekend provided ample opportunity to traverse Florida’s blazing heat and check out every nook and cranny of the festival.

Saturday offered little to no cloud cover except for a thick haze hanging low over the cannabis convention. Simply put, the convention was a cannabis connoisseur’s chocolate factory. The convention showcased the latest and most incredible wares, from innovative smoking devices to advanced vaporizers. Each booth provided a plethora of gadgets and gizmos to help us stoners partake in our favorite activity.

Midway through the convention, artist Kole Trent, aka Nugtopia, displayed his beautiful art depicting dancing nugs within vistas of faraway locations. Much like any memorable artist, Trent encodes subtext into his paintings. His overall message in his paintings is to celebrate cannabis culture, lift the veil of taboo on the plant, and spread awareness of its healing properties. One piece in particular, “White Rhino,” tackles big pharma quite literally by having a pill hogtied by a nug clad in cowboy attire with his trusty eyeless rhino steed by his side. As my eyes danced around his works of art, the haze above thickened, and a certain giddiness overtook me.

Dr. Dabber contributed to the growing haze and intoxicating giddiness by providing an ample dose of wax within their electronic rigs to everybody who stopped by. The electronic rig’s Evo model improves vapor density via a patented quick-connect adaptor, resulting in a considerably milkier hit than other electronic rigs. Dr. Dabber supplied precisely what everyone needed before returning and basking in Florida’s infamous heat.

While walking over to the glassblowing showcase, Orlando’s own Kash’d Out played on triumphantly as clouds of sensimilla billowed from the crowd. The song “Way Too High For This” was comically true because, at this point, I was hypnotized by the glassblowers and their ability to mold glass to their will. Flames spewed from torches as artists stamped, pressed, and twisted red-hot glass. Techniques varied from each glassblower, yet the simplicity of it all was mesmerizing.

Through the sounds of torches blazing and the sights of glass being shifted, Fortunate Youth started their set, bringing attendees to their feet and shuffling close to the main stage. Despite the heat, everyone could be seen smiling, dancing, and sharing fat doobies. Amidst all this, giant inflatable bananas and joints bounced above the heads of all the attendees. Each bop of the enormous bananas and joints spread the good vibes further and further through the festival grounds until everyone smiled wide.

“We try to keep it professional, but we’re just having fun,” Said Fortunate Youth frontman Dan Kelly. His smile alone swooned the crowd, but the family gathering on stage is what made Fortunate Youth’s set so heartwarming. Perhaps it was the amount of smoke in the air, but it brought a few tears to my bloodshot eyes.

Once Collie Buddz took the stage, he ignited the crowd with his infectious energy and mesmerizing vocals. His unique blend of reggae, dancehall, and hip-hop had the entire crowd swaying and singing along to every beat. He seamlessly transitioned between crowd favorites and new releases, keeping the energy high throughout his set. The crowd was particularly enthusiastic during his performance of his hit song “Legal Now,” which had everyone singing the catchy chorus in unison. As his set ended, the crowd erupted into cheers and applause, showering the Bermudian with some Floridian love.

Unfortunately, with the Florida heat and humidity, it almost always rains with it. Around 8 o’clock, the festivities and music were forced to pause, but before long, Protoje and his band could be heard strumming their instruments and turning amplifiers and speakers back on. Then, the air cooled down, and the show was back on.

Protoje closed out the night in fantastic style, with a bedazzling array of lights, guitars shredding, drums thumping, and bass booming. His performance didn’t simply play on like most. Instead, it stretched across the festival grounds, infecting everyone with the irresistible need to dance.

As the night drew to a close, attendees were left buzzing with excitement and a sense of awe for what was to come on day two of the highly-anticipated Groves Fest. The unforgettable performances, fascinating exhibits, and vibrant atmosphere left a lasting impression on all who attended, fueling their anticipation for what was sure to be an even more incredible day ahead.

Day Two

Waking up on the second day of Groves Fest, a rush of earthy petrichor filled the air, carried by the gentle breeze that whispered through the festival grounds. The invigorating scent of the fresh rainfall embraced the senses, awakening a feeling of rejuvenation and connection with nature. It was as if the festival grounds had been cleansed overnight, and the fragrance of wet concrete and freshly dewed grass mixed with the humid air rejuvenated and invigorated the skin.

The thoughts of the first day of the festival permeated through my mind like a vibrant symphony, replaying each moment and filling me with a renewed sense of anticipation. The pulsating rhythms of the music, the flashing lights, and the collective euphoria of the crowd danced vividly in my memories. The warmth of the Florida sun on my skin reminded me of infectious laughter that echoed through the air.

As I prepared for the next day, a surge of excitement coursed through my veins, fueled by the promise of new adventures, electrifying performances, and the opportunity to lose myself once again in the magical embrace of the festival. With a heart brimming with anticipation, I eagerly embraced the unknown, ready to embark on another extraordinary chapter of this captivating journey through the Florida Groves Festival.

Prior to the gates opening, Nature Studios talked with LanceO and asked to sum up the festival vibe in one word. “Great,” he responded while eating fresh dates. He further explained how the rainfall sent some home, but the faithful remained to watch Protoje’s incredible set.

Once the festival opened its gates, I made my way over to the tattoo convention, my heart pounding with a mix of anticipation and curiosity. The buzzing energy emanating from the vibrant booths and the exquisite artwork on display enveloped me, instantly drawing me into a world of ink and creativity. Talented artists adorned in their signature style wielded their tattoo machines like magical wands, turning bare skin into living canvases of art and personal expression.

The air was thick with the buzzing sound of needles and the faint scent of antiseptic, blending harmoniously with the hum of conversations and laughter. Intrigued by the diverse array of designs and techniques, I strolled through the convention, witnessing the transformation of bodies into living works of art. The passion and dedication of the artists were intense as they etched indelible marks onto the skin, creating pieces that would forever tell stories of love, strength, and individuality.

The tattoo convention became a mesmerizing sanctuary, a place where ink became a language of emotions and an avenue for self-discovery. Immersed in this captivating world, I found myself contemplating the inked possibilities that awaited me, eager to embrace the artistry that would leave a lasting imprint on my own journey. However, my pale, slightly sunburned skin remained tattooless as I ventured back to the festival grounds and over to the shoe conventon.

Walking into the shoe convention, I was immediately greeted with a blissful blast of refreshing air conditioning that offered respite from the early-afternoon humidity. As I took my first steps, the tantalizing aroma of fresh sneakers enveloped me, intertwining the scents of new leather, rubber soles, and the promise of endless style possibilities. Sneaker fans and collectors alike traversed the colorful displays, stacking boxes upon boxes in their arms.

The atmosphere was charged with a wild sense of passion and admiration for footwear craftsmanship. From classic icons to limited editions, every step revealed a kaleidoscope of colors, textures, and design ingenuity. Sneakerheads eagerly engaged in animated conversations, sharing anecdotes about their prized collections and seeking out the latest releases.

With each aisle I explored, my own enthusiasm grew, my eyes drawn to the immaculate detailing and innovative silhouettes that adorned the walls. The shoe convention became a haven where footwear aficionados united, united by a common love for the artistry and culture that thrived within the sneaker realm. As I soaked in the atmosphere, I knew that within these walls, I would uncover not just shoes but a celebration of self-expression, creativity, and the undeniable love of fashionable footwear.

Somewhere in the mix of sneakers, Pop N Snax, provided some mid-day munchies from all over the globe. From Korean Doritos to Japanese sodas, Pop N Snax had it all. Navigating through the festival with a delicious treat in hand became a delightful part of the entire experience and a moment to recharge and indulge in culinary delights.

Before long, the sounds of Cloud9Vibes were coming from the main stage, and festivalgoers made their way over to the set. Despite the heat, the band played a thunderous set, gearing everyone up for the day ahead. Each bump of the bass electrified the senses and reawakened dancing bones. All the while, a car show began over in a far corner of the festival, beckoning me with rumbling engines and the shine of polished exteriors.

As my curiosity ignited, I made my way through the car show, drawn by the symphony of revving motors and the array of eye-catching vehicles. The scene before me was a testament to automotive craftsmanship and the passion of car enthusiasts. Each vehicle, carefully selected and proudly on show, presented a distinct tale that combined design, power, and individual flare. The display included a magnificent variety of cars, each a manifestation of automotive craftsmanship, from timeless antique beauties to sleek modern marvels. While surrounded by the intoxicating blend of exhaust fumes and roaring engines, I felt a deep appreciation for the timeless allure and the boundless ingenuity that resonated within the world of cars.

Meanwhile, the clouds above turned slightly grey, and the threat of a Florida sun shower loomed, but as any Floridian knows, the rain only delivers relief. The first few droplets gently descended from the sky, creating a distinct pitter-patter on the festival grounds. A collective sigh of relief filled the air as attendees embraced the refreshing mist, knowing that the momentary interruption would provide a break from the overwhelming heat. The scent of the earthy aroma released by rain kissed the warm ground and intermingled with the festive atmosphere, heightening the sense of the festival’s magical enchantment.

At the main stage, Artikal Sound System rocked the festival to its core, the crowd seemed to double in size, drawn like magnets to the pulsating beats and infectious rhythms. The power of the music resonated deep within, igniting a collective energy that coursed through every person. Bodies swayed in unison, hands reached for the sky, and the air was electrified with an indescribable synergy.

Once Bumpin Uglies hit the stage, they unleashed their sonic magic, and the atmosphere transformed into a sea of euphoria, where worries dissolved and pure bliss took over. Throughout their set, time seemed to stand still as the music became the heartbeat of the festival, enveloping everyone in its irresistible embrace. As the crowd swelled, a sense of shared connection stretched the air, reminding me of the power of music.

While venturing through the masses, the sun began to set, painting the sky with hues of gold and orange and casting a warm, gentle glow over the festival grounds. As if on cue, the sounds of Jamaica’s very own Inner Circle could be heard warming up in the distance. The familiar melodies and iconic beats washed over the crowd like a wave of nostalgia, instantly captivating hearts and drawing people closer to the stage. Excitement filled the air as anticipation mounted, knowing that this legendary reggae band was about to grace the stage and create magic with their music. The lively chatter gradually subsided, replaced by an electric buzz of anticipation. As the first notes rang out, a collective cheer erupted, and the crowd was transported to a place where worries melted away, and only the rhythm mattered.

Inner Circle’s infectious energy and charismatic stage presence commanded attention, their timeless classics, and soulful tunes echoing through the night air. The atmosphere became charged with a renewed sense of joy and unity as strangers became friends, swaying and singing together in harmony. With every song, Inner Circle carried the crowd on a musical journey, their melodies weaving through our souls and leaving an indelible imprint. As the sun descended beyond the horizon, the stage lit up with an ethereal glow, matching the radiant smiles and swaying bodies.

Once the moon shone brightly above, Thievery Corporation began their set unlike anything I’ve seen before. The stage came alive with an enchanting blend of electronic beats, world music flavors, and captivating visuals that transported us to a realm of sonic exploration. The air was charged with otherworldly energy as their music effortlessly merged genres, bridging the gap between past and present, East and West. I was spellbound, with my eyes fixated on the mesmerizing performance. The soulful vocals intertwined with the hypnotic melodies, creating a sonic tapestry that resonated deep within my soul. As the rhythms pulsated through my body, I became one with the music, moving to its irresistible groove. The synergy between the band members was wild as they effortlessly blended live instrumentation with electronic elements, pushing the boundaries of sound and taking me on a transcendental journey.

By the end of the night, I wasn’t ready to leave the festival grounds, as Groves Fest had undeniably provided one of the best festivals of the year. As the crowd began to disperse, a bittersweet feeling washed over me, knowing that this remarkable gathering had ended. A shared understanding that I had been part of something truly extraordinary. Groves Fest had exceeded all expectations, delivering an immersive experience that transcended mere entertainment. On my drive home, the festival’s spirit lingered in my bones, reminding me of the profound impact music, art, and community can have on my life.
